Madhya Pradesh is experiencing a relentless spell of torrential rains since the onset of the monsoon, disrupting normal life in several parts of the state. Heavy rainfall over the past few days has led to rivers and drains overflowing, causing widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas. In a recent incident, a car got trapped in a waterlogged underpass in Narsinghpur district.

Following incessant rain late Saturday night, the water level in the underpass rose rapidly, quickly filling it completely. A driver, unaware of the depth of the water, attempted to cross the underpass with his car.
As the driver entered the underpass, his car became stuck in the water and the engine stalled. The water level continued to rise, causing panic for the driver who then called for help. Local residents immediately informed the police and disaster management teams about the incident. Upon receiving the information, rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

Local police, Home Guard personnel, and some volunteers collectively carried out the operation. They used ropes and other equipment to try and reach the trapped driver.
After approximately an hour of relentless effort, the rescue team successfully reached the driver. The driver was safely extracted from the car and provided with first aid. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in the incident. However, the car sustained considerable damage and later required the assistance of a crane to be pulled out of the underpass.

In many cities like Narsinghpur, underpasses and low-lying areas frequently become waterlogged during heavy rains, disrupting traffic and increasing risks to life and property. It is imperative for the administration to take concrete steps in this direction to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Madhya Pradesh for the next few days. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from waterlogged areas. Specific caution has been advised when crossing underpasses and bridges.
The state government has instructed all district collectors to remain on high alert and be prepared to handle any emergency situation. Disaster management teams have been activated and provided with necessary equipment and resources. Citizens are also advised to follow guidelines issued by the local administration.
Questions Over Urban Drainage Systems
This incident raises serious questions about the inadequate drainage systems in urban areas of Madhya Pradesh. In many cities, old and insufficient drainage infrastructure is proving incapable of handling heavy rainfall, resulting in flooded roads and disrupted daily life.
Experts believe that rapid urbanization and the expansion of concrete jungles have obstructed natural drainage paths, preventing rainwater from flowing away effectively. Additionally, a lack of regular cleaning and maintenance of drainage lines is also a significant cause of waterlogging.
The administration must focus on long-term solutions, including the development of modern drainage systems, removal of encroachments, and rejuvenation of water bodies. Only through these measures can future disasters be averted and a safe environment be provided to citizens.
Currently, the situation in Narsinghpur is under control, and efforts to remove the trapped vehicle are ongoing. The local administration has appealed to the public to remain patient and contact helpline numbers immediately in case of any emergency.
