Politics has heated up in West Bengal over eggs reportedly going 'missing' from the mid-day meal for school children. The opposition has questioned the scheme's implementation, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has rejected the allegations.

The opposition says children must receive the prescribed nutritional items on time and in full. The TMC said the scheme is running as per rules and that complaints from a few places are being blown out of proportion.

Educationists say the mid-day meal is important for both attendance and nutrition, so its monitoring should be transparent.

Officials said inquiries will be conducted and necessary steps taken where complaints have come from. The matter remains a talking point in state politics.
